Growing up in Newark’s Muslim community, Malik learned Islamic principles and teachings, which shaped his thoughts on modern problems including racism, religion, and power. A lifelong curiosity about his origins drove him to research his family tree, which in turn piqued his interest in investigating various aspects of ethnicity and identity, especially as they relate to American Indian history and its intricate relationships to other cultural narratives.

Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, Malik H. Majeed began a life-changing journey of self-exploration. Having spent three generations of his family fully immersed in the city’s lively culture, he was born and raised there. After serving twelve years as an Essex County prison officer, Malik’s life took an unexpected turn when he began studying his family’s history. This research also revealed previously unknown stories, which piqued his interest in history and the complex nature of the human experience. His most recent book, Roc The Mike, is based on his life and profession as a Muslim in Newark and a police officer. His writing provides a window into bygone ages, revealing hidden histories while also illuminating issues of religion, racism, and power.
Where Does He Come from?
Originally from Newark, New Jersey, Malik H. Majeed has spent his whole life there. He is a third-generation Newark resident and has experienced a lot of the city’s rich cultural diversity. To a large extent, Majeed’s identity and perspective on the world came from his childhood spent in the Muslim community of Newark. For more than ten years, he worked as a corrections officer for Essex County, where he learned about the inner workings of the justice system and the dynamics of society. His background as a Muslim, his time spent working as a police officer, and his Newark roots all come together to provide an intricate background against which Malik writes on culture and history.
